Skills to Support Your Dyslexia in the Workplace
What's it about?
Individuals with dyslexia can often struggle with basic literacy, communication and organisational skills. These are highly valued in the modern workplace, especially in an office environment where productive dialogue and professional time management contribute to a successful company.
Concept Northern believe that no one with dyslexia should be disadvantaged at work or unable to achieve their potential. That’s why we created our training programme accredited by City & Guilds - “Skills to Support Your Dyslexia in the Workplace”. The programme teaches learners how Assistive Technology can help when completing common work tasks including planning a project, preparing a presentation and interacting with colleagues.
Combining knowledge of software solutions with a greater understanding of the basic skills involved means increased confidence, greater productivity and a chance for individuals with dyslexia to experience the workplace as a level playing field where they can achieve parity with their peers.

Who is the programme for?
The programme has been written for individuals with dyslexia who are preparing to enter employment or are already employed and want to learn how Assistive Technology can improve their workplace experience. The programme is also suitable for school pupils with dyslexia who may need further skills and confidence to help them enter the job market in the near future.
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology is defined by the British Assistive Technology Association as: “any product or service that maintains or improves the ability of individuals with disabilities or impairments to communicate, learn and live independent, fulfilling and productive lives”. This programme uses two well-established assistive software applications – Texthelp Read&Write and MatchWare MindView.
A candidate must have access to the following to participate in the programme -
- A PC with internet access
- Windows 7, 8 or 10
- Microsoft Office (2010 or newer) or a Microsoft / Outlook.com account*
- Texthelp Read&Write (literacy software) and Matchware MindView (mapping software)**
*An Outlook.com account is free for individuals and provides access to online versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Learners complete six modules which are organised into two groups -
- Software skills
- Business skills
The business modules build on the techniques learned in the software modules, and give guidance for applying them in a workplace context.
The programme has a nominal learning time of 100 hours and combines textbook learning, videos and interactive scenarios into a cohesive and involving learning experience. Learners study at their own pace and when they want to.

How to use Texthelp Read&Write to improve reading and writing skills when completing essential office-based tasks.
MINDVIEW SKILLS FOR THE WORKPLACE
How to use MatchWare MindView to plan, organise and brainstorm when at work.
MS OFFICE SKILLS FOR THE WORKPLACE
How to implement accessibility features in Windows and perform key office-based tasks with Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
MANAGING TIME WITH ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
How to implement effective time management practices by using recognised techniques in conjunction with assistive software.
WORKPLACE READING AND WRITING WITH ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
How to improve business literacy skills by using recognised techniques in conjunction with assistive software.
PRESENTING WITH ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
How to improve communication at work in meetings, interviews and presentations by using recognised techniques in conjunction with assistive software.
Candidates are assessed by multiple-choice exams and portfolio assignment evidence. Both of these forms of assessment can be done at home without the need to attend a formal exam session.
